FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Short answers about the first call, lessons, MyMEI, prices, companies and paired lessons. If your question isn't here, ask Marcus.

Free call. In English, Italian, Spanish or Russian. Camera optional. No sales pitch.

The first call and getting started

Do I need a certain level?

No. There's no level test, in the call or before it. Your level doesn't matter: your calendar does. Your tutor sees where you are in the first lessons, and the plan starts from there.

Is the first call free?

Yes. The first call with Marcus is free, with no commitment. It's a conversation, not a sales pitch.

What languages can I speak in the first call?

English, Italian, Spanish or Russian. The call lasts 15 minutes, by video, and the camera is optional.

What happens after the call?

Marcus matches you with your MEI tutor and a fixed weekly time, or times. We take on new students after a first call. If the call goes well for both of us, you can start as early as the following week.

Is it for teenagers?

No. MEI is for adults only, aged 21 and over.

Do your tutors also teach children?

No. MEI tutors teach adults only: professionals who need English for work, and adults of every age, after retirement too, who want General English to travel and live better. Teaching adults is a specialisation, and it's ours.

Lessons and schedule

Can I choose my tutor?

No, we match you. We all choose the people we like; it's natural. But a tutor chosen that way tends to do what you want, not always what you need, and sooner or later every discipline asks you to trust the process. Marcus matches you with a MEI tutor from our small team of Cambridge CELTA tutors, planning it so your lessons run smoothly: a professional whose job is your progress, and who can tell you when you're wrong. You can read their profiles on the About page.

How is MEI different from finding a tutor on a marketplace?

You keep what works in a private tutor: one person, every week, who knows you. And you get the organisation of a school, which is hard for one person to build alone: the same tutor at the same time every week, a plan a supervisor checks, MyMEI with every lesson and its materials, and a progress test every 2 months. Tutors on marketplaces (e.g. Preply, italki, Classgap) are often very good professionals: the difference is the structure around them. More on lessons with an online English tutor.

What do we work on in a lesson?

Mostly speaking: it's what almost everyone needs, and the lesson is built around you doing it. Your tutor doesn't give you a lecture. With questions and real situations, they get the English out of you; Cambridge CELTA teachers call it eliciting. Grammar, vocabulary, how to build a sentence and how to get your message across are worked on along the way.

Can I have more than one lesson a week?

Yes. You can have one, two or more 55-minute lessons a week, always with the same tutor, each at its own fixed time.

What if I need to cancel a lesson?

Cancel at least 24 hours before, from the MyMEI app, and reschedule the lesson on any other day or at any other time within 45 days. Cancelling now and then is normal. Cancelling often is what the fixed time helps you avoid.

Can I change my weekly time?

Yes. We advise against changing it often, for example every month to follow shift work: a new slot may not be free, and the fixed time is what keeps the method working.

How long is a lesson, and where does it happen?

55 minutes, online, by video call with your tutor. The materials, notes and homework stay in MyMEI.

MyMEI and progress tests

What is MyMEI?

Your student area. It keeps the history of every lesson with its materials, your homework, reminders and lesson credits. You can book, move or cancel lessons from the app and see your progress by skill. Your tutor and Marcus follow it too.

How do you check my progress?

In two ways. Continuous assessment, with MEI's own adaptive test, as you go. And a progress test every 2 months, which shows progress, gaps and how your English is changing. Your tutor and Marcus read the results and adjust the plan.

Prices and payments

How much does it cost?

€35 per individual lesson, and €24 per person per lesson in a pair. Every lesson is 55 minutes. For company groups, the two workshops have public prices and the other paths get a quote. See prices and monthly examples.

Is there a contract?

No packages and no long contract: you continue month by month. To not continue next month, just drop us a simple email at least three days before the end of the month.

How do I pay?

You pay for the calendar month in advance, at the start of the month, with a regular invoice. The month has the lessons of your weekly rhythm: a month with five Tuesdays has five Tuesday lessons. If you start mid-month, you pay only for the lessons left.

For companies

What do you offer companies?

Courses for groups of 3 to 6 colleagues. Two workshops with public prices and a fixed programme, Presentations & Public Speaking and Negotiations & Sales; and the paths on quote: General English for teams and custom paths. For one or two people, we use individual and paired lessons. More on English courses for companies.

Can you invoice the company?

Yes, with a regular company invoice. Payment is always in advance: for the whole workshop, or monthly, quarterly or for the whole course for the other paths, as agreed.

Paired lessons

Who can I take paired lessons with?

A friend, your partner or a colleague: any adult aged 21 or over who can keep the same weekly time, or times, as you. You each pay €24 per lesson. More on paired English lessons.

Do we need to have the same level?

Not the same, but close: a big gap doesn't work for either of you. Marcus looks at it with you in the first call and tells you whether working as a pair will be productive.

What if one of us can't come?

The person who misses it loses that lesson, and the lesson goes ahead for the other. If neither of you can come, exceptions are possible only on request and in isolated cases.
