WHY THIS COURSE
You can already speak English. That’s precisely the problem.
You manage meetings. You travel without anxiety. People understand you and nobody asks you to repeat yourself. And still, you come out of most conversations having said roughly sixty per cent of what you actually meant. You use the same twelve verbs. You take the long way round because the short way needs a word you don’t have. Your English works — it just doesn’t sound like you.
This is the plateau, and it’s where most adult learners quietly stop for good. It happens for a very logical reason: getting by is a stable equilibrium. Communication succeeds, so nothing forces you to improve. Errors fossilise because they no longer block meaning and nobody corrects them out of politeness. Vocabulary stops growing because you can always paraphrase. Register stays stuck in one gear — friendly-neutral, which is fine for a coffee and wrong for a negotiation, a complaint, or a joke.
This course is built to break that. Eight weeks, sixteen sessions, maximum six people, working on abstract topics, deliberate lexical upgrades, register-switching and controlled pressure. Expect to be corrected on things nobody has corrected in ten years. That’s the point of paying for it.

Lexical range and precision
Replacing generic verbs with exact ones. Collocations that make you sound like a speaker rather than a translator. Saying it in six words instead of twenty-two.

Formal, neutral, informal, diplomatic. The same message delivered three ways, for three audiences, on purpose.

Opinions, nuance and hedging
How to say “possibly, but” in English without sounding either aggressive or evasive. Conditionals, speculation, qualification — the machinery of adult conversation.

Fluency under pressure
Speaking without rehearsal time, being interrupted, disagreeing live, holding your position when the conversation speeds up.

De-fossilising your errors
Your specific, personal, long-standing mistakes identified and dismantled. Nobody else has told you about them because they were being polite.

Idiom, humour and cultural signals
What people actually say, what understatement means, when the joke lands and when the polite phrase is a warning. The part textbooks never get to.

Professionally curated materials
Before every session you receive materials prepared by the tutor: a vocabulary upgrade list replacing the generic verbs you currently rely on with the precise ones you’re missing, a register reference showing the same message in formal, neutral and informal English, a hedging and qualification phrase bank for opinions, hypotheticals and the grey areas of your own field, and an idiom and collocation guide organised by the real situations where they actually come up. Proprietary MEI material combined with selected third-party resources. In PDF format — yours to keep, even after the course ends.
Practical assignments
Every session ends with a concrete task: a three-minute recorded argument on a topic you’d rather avoid, a rewrite of the same message in two registers, a response to an article in your own sector.
Coordinated peer-to-peer practice
Some activities between sessions are done in pairs: structured debates, cross-feedback on recordings, mutual review against a criteria grid supplied by the tutor. Peer feedback at this level is genuinely useful, but only when it’s structured — so it is.

On completion you receive a formal Marcus English Institute certificate detailing the programme completed. You can add it directly to the Licences and Certifications section of your LinkedIn profile in two clicks.
